OTTAWA LSAT

APPROACH

Core Principles

  1. Personal

Every student is unique. As your teacher, my job is to understand you and help you overcome your challenges and hone your strengths in ways that are tailored to your learning style.

  2. Flexible

Everyone has different schedules, resources, and needs. I’ll tutor you in whatever ways and at whatever times are best for you.

  3. Innovative

There is always more to learn. I constantly look for ways to improve upon the time-tested methods and find better approaches to the unique challenges the LSAT presents.

The Tutoring Session

Online Tutoring

When tutoring remotely, I use Google Meet and an online whiteboard to facilitate easy communication. The online whiteboard allows us both to visually interact with the questions at the same time. It has the added bonus of allowing you to look back at it and remind yourself of what you learned when you are studying on your own. Try out the whiteboard here.

Session Content

The content and structure of a tutoring session will vary depending on the individual student.

Students New to the LSAT

Generally, for students who are just beginning their test preparation, I provide an introduction to the LSAT and assistance in creating a study plan that will use your time wisely. I also outline some basic strategies for approaching each section of the test and explain the various question types.

Students with Studying Experience

For those who have already started studying, either by taking an LSAT course or working through a book, I'll sit down with you and observe the way you work through LSAT questions. By watching and hearing about your thought processes as you take the test, I can identify where exactly you are struggling, and we can work together to develop strategies to strengthen those areas.

Session Length

In general, I suggest that individual tutoring sessions last 1.5 to 2 hours. This length allows enough time to adequately identify problem areas and develop strategies to fix them while remaining efficient and avoiding the mental fatigue that occurs in a longer session. Of course, I am always flexible and willing to accommodate the timing needs of all my students.

Philosophy

My philosophy is that good tutoring starts with an accurate understanding of each particular student. Every person comes to the LSAT with different strengths and weaknesses and different natural approaches to the skills of reading and logic. My job is to listen to you and observe how you approach the test. After understanding your current test strategies, I will provide you with tools to make the most of your strengths and advice on how to improve in the areas where you have difficulty.
